About the Trail Road BESS

Brookfield Renewable Power Inc. (“BRPI”) or an affiliate, will be advancing the Trail Road BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) (“Project”) through Evolugen, Brookfield’s Canadian operating business. The Project directly responds to the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) call for additional capacity to meet Ontario’s growing electricity consumption. The Project represents a cost-effective solution to add capacity, enhance flexible grid operations, and save greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Ontario by reducing the need for carbon-intensive power plants during times of peak demand.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The proposed Project is in the feasibility stage and consists of installing battery modules, some additional power equipment, light civil, safety, and security infrastructure. It is expected to be operational by May 2028. The project site is currently under review. Further details and project updates will be provided shortly on this page.

  • Initial investment of ~$350 million
  • Adds up to 150 MW of capacity and 600 MWh of energy storage
  • Interconnects to IESO using the nearby 230 kV circuit

Community Consultation

As part of our commitment to building trust with local stakeholders, community members are invited to share project comments, questions and concerns by email at info@evolugen.comWe recently hosted two Public Meetings to introduce the Fitzroy Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Project and receive feedback. The presentation and poster boards displayed during the meetings can be found below, in addition to the Meeting Minutes from both the November 1, 2023 and November 2, 2023 public meetings.
