About the Project
Brookfield BRP Canada Corp, an affiliate of Brookfield Power Prince Wind LP (Brookfield), is planning to repower the Prince Wind Farm located in the Prince, Dennis, Pennefather and Aweres Townships within Ontario’s District of Algoma. Prince Wind has been operational since 2006 and is the first wind project that Brookfield built.
The Project intends to participate in the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) future competitive procurements for energy to meet Ontario’s growing electricity consumption. The Project is an opportunity to use an existing site and infrastructure to continue meet Ontario’s electricity needs while extending the long-term benefits to the local communities – supporting jobs, economic benefits, and continuing to contribute positively to regional development.
REPOWERING OVERVIEW
- Existing 126 wind turbines will be retrofitted or completely replaced with modern turbines.
- The overall project boundary will remain the same.
- If the existing turbines are replaced with modern turbines, new turbine foundations will be installed and a new collection system will be installed to connect the new turbines to the existing substations.
- The existing substations and transmission lines will remain unchanged and will continue to be utilized.
- Some of the access roads within the project may be widened to enable larger turbine components to be brought to site.

PROJECT BENEFITS
Brookfield is dedicated to being a good steward of the environment by protecting, preserving, and enhancing natural ecosystems and biodiversity in the development, operation, and repowering of our facilities.
- We aim to repower Prince Wind with as little additional environmental disturbance as possible.
- Repowering the Project with new technology will continue local production of clean, renewable energy for coming decades, supporting Ontario’s transition away from greenhouse gas-emitting fuel sources. More local production will also reduce the need for energy imports and will support local industrial demand growth (e.g., Algoma Steel electrification).
- Development and construction activities will create local job opportunities, direct and indirect benefits for the local economy.
- The repowering will extend the life of the project for another 20+ years which will continue to support well-paying local jobs to operate and maintain the wind farm.
- Through the permitting process, Brookfield will commit to meeting the highest bar of regulatory compliance applied in the modern environment for wind development.
- We are committed to including First Nation participation in the Project. We will be actively seeking feedback during the design and implementation phases. The Project will also create participation opportunities for the local First Nations Communities.
PROJECT TIMELINE
- The Project began baseline environmental studies and preliminary project design in early 2025.
- On October 16, Brookfield initiated an Environmental Screening Process for the Prince Wind Repowering Project. Pursuant to Ontario Regulation 50/24 under the Environmental Assessment Act, the proposed Project changes qualify as a “Category B” significant modification as described in the MECP “Guide to Environmental Assessment Requirements for Electricity Projects” (February 2024).
- The Project will voluntarily undertake an Environmental Review and will produce an Environmental Review Report.
- The Prince Wind Repowering Project is expected to be constructed from 2028-2030 and be operational by the end of 2030 if successful in the 2026 IESO LT2 solicitation.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
- As part of the Environmental Screening Process, Prince Wind will be holding Public Information Centres to distribute information on the Project. Opportunities to provide feedback on the Project will be available both during the events and online.
- The first Public Information Centre will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 5-8 PM in the Steelton Room at the Northern Community Centre.
